The Purpose of the dam
The Malindi Dam is a 20 km dam being built on the Sabaki River in Malindi, Kenya. It will store two billion cubic liters of water and irrigate over a million acres.
The Malindi Dams Project is part of a larger initiative under the Kenya-UK Strategic Partnership, aimed at boosting climate finance and sustainable development in Kenya. The project includes the construction of a multipurpose dam in the Tana River area, which will generate 1,000 megawatts of hydroelectric energy and provide irrigation for 400,000 hectares of farmland.
Additionally, the project includes the Malindi Solar Expansion, a 40-megawatt solar plant to be built by UK company Globeleq with finance from British International Investment. This project aims to double the existing solar capacity and includes battery storage to ensure a stable energy supply.
The overall goal of these projects is to enhance energy security, support agricultural development, and promote sustainable economic growth in the region.
